Ensure that you have a current, valid passport that is not about to expire

Take extra copies of passport-sized photographs.

Take and carry photocopies of all travel documents, your passport and your credit cards. Leave a full set of photocopies at home or with someone you can contact, if necessary.

Determine whether you need a visa for the countries you plan to visit. Investigate this as
       early as possible as some countries may require up to six months' notice. The links below are
       provided to assist you in ascertaining visa requirements. Not all links are official government
       links, so speak to your travel agent, if in doubt.

Consider registering with your local Embassy when you arrive so that you are contactable
       especially if you are travelling to areas of political uncertainty.

Investigate any precautionary or mandatory immunizations.

Some countries require proof of sufficient funds and an exit ticket. Some also require exit visas and/or exit fees.

Research local customs, laws and dress codes to avoid inadvertent offence

Ensure you have sufficient medications with you as some may not be available abroad.

Check you have adequate insurance coverage not only for your travels, but for your possessions
     back home.

Leave your itinerary with family or friends at home.

Always stay with your luggage and never accept parcels from others.
